Tribe Topples No. 72 UNCW In Women's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – William & Mary built early momentum by winning the doubles point and then added five singles victories for a 6-1 decision over No. 72 UNCW on Thursday in the Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis opener for both teams at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Tribe, which has won 24 CAA titles, improved to 5-6 with the victory. W&M paid its first visit to the UNCW courts and handled the Seahawks for the 13th time without a loss.
 
The Seahawks, who picked up their first ITA national ranking in 10 years earlier this week, fell to 8-2 overall and 6-2 at home. It was the first of three consecutive conference matches for the Seahawks, who entertain Towson on Saturday in a 10 a.m. home match.
 
Playing in near-ideal spring conditions, W&M captured the doubles point behind wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and then raised the score to 2-0 when Lisa Fukutoku trimmed UNCW's Anna Daniels, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. The Tribe added a singles win at the No. 2 slot before Ine Stange beat UNCW's Stela Joksimovic, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 for the clincher.
 
Junior Brinley Bell of High Point, N.C., recorded the lone singles victory for the Seahawks. She cruised past W&M's Elisa Van Meeteren, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
