Belaya, Gish Collect CAA Weekly Honors

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW graduate students Sasha Belaya and Lauren Gish have been recognized for their play by the Colonial Athletic Association after the Seahawk women's tennis team registered three victories last week to raise its record to 8-2 this spring.
 
The surging Seahawks blanked Georgetown, Ky., and UNC Asheville by identical 7-0 scores and upset No. 67 Penn State, 4-2, at the UNCW courts.
 
Belaya, from Melbourne, Fla., was named CAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week after going 2-0 at No. 1 singles. She defeated UNCA's Lize Alet Morkel, 6-2, 7-5, and knocked off Penn State's Yvonne Zuffova, 6-2, 7-5. Belaya owns a 5-2 record at the top of the lineup for the Seahawks, who have won three in a row.
 
Belaya also teamed up with Gish to win CAA Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week honors. The No. 1 doubles pair carved out a 7-6 (5) victory over UNCA'S Rosie Dickson and Ami Grace Dougah. They also partnered for a 6-2 victory over Penn State's Olivia Ryan and Gabby O'Gorman to clinch the doubles point against the Nittany Lions.
 
Belaya and Gish stayed perfect as UNCW's top doubles unit with a 6-0 mark this spring.
 
"Sasha has been strong in her mindset on the singles court," said Olsen. "Sasha and Lauren have tremendous chemistry and communication when they compete on the doubles court."
