Seahawks Host Hawks In Battle Of The Birds

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW's Boseman Field will host a battle of the hawks this weekend as the Seahawks welcome the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks for a pair of softball doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

First pitch of the doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 12, will be at 2:30 p.m. followed by an 11 a.m. start in the twinbill on Sunday, Mar. 13. All games will be streamed on FloSports with a booth of Jim Whitmeyer and Tom Lamont on the call. As usual, live stats can be found on UNCWStats.com

The Seahawks (15-3) carry a five-game win streak into Saturday after outscoring St. Bonaventure, 18-0, in a three-game sweep last weekend. The Hawks (2-13), meanwhile, make their inaugural trip to Wilmington for the four-game weekend slate.

UNCW features a pitching staff that has been dominant over the season's first five weeks, including freshman Emily Winstead, who was named Colonial Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week after fanning 13 batters last weekend against St. Bonaventure.

Seahawk spinners have tossed 22 straight scoreless innings and own a microscopic 0.24 ERA over the five-game win streak. The staff's 1.84 season ERA is good for 22nd in the nation.

In the batter's box, second baseman Tayler Vitola leads the team with a .450 batting average to go with 27 hits, the second-most in the conference, while senior Janel Gamache is tied for the CAA lead with 21 RBI through 18 games.

The Hawks enter the Port City after dropping three of five games in the Marshall Round Robin in Huntington, W.Va. last weekend.

A pair of sophomores pace the UMES offense. Two-way player Tatum Kresley paces the team with 21 hits while catcher Julia Garcia has a team-high 14 RBI along with a home run.

UMES graduate pitcher Nasya Goodman is 2-4 this season with a 2.72 ERA in 36 innings pitched. The Willingboro, N.J., product has made 12 appearances, five starts, in the circle this season and has recorded three complete games.

Following the weekend, the Seahawks hit the road for the second time this season to play North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Tuesday, Mar. 15. First pitch at Anderson Softball Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES: UNCW bested the Hawks, 7-0, in the only matchup in the series in 2014 … Freshman Kara Hammock and Emily Winstead have accounted for 73.5 percent (86-of-117) of punchouts this season … The Seahawks are outscoring opponents 108-45 this season … Winstead is the reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week … UNCW has tossed six shutouts and 10 complete games this year … This weekend concludes an 18-game homestand for UNCW.
