Seahawks Dominate Wofford In Home Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team captured the early doubles point and tacked on five singles victories for a 6-1 decision over visiting Wofford in the home opener for the Seahawks early Saturday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The defending Colonial Athletic Association champions improved to 1-2 with the win over the Terriers from the Southern Conference. Wofford dropped to 0-6 after losing its fifth straight road match.
 
UNCW won the doubles point after claiming matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions and then swept the first three matches off the court in singles to clinch the win.
 
Seahawk newcomer Harold Huens dominated Wofford's Alex Horn 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to push the lead to 2-0 and freshman Trey Mallory extended the margin to 3-0 after defeating Wofford sophomore Will Fullett, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
 
UNCW senior Davide Innocenti then clinched the match by trimming Callum Rendle, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 slot.
 
The Seahawks play the second of 10 home matches on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022, when regional rival Coastal Carolina visits the Port City for a 1 p.m. match.
 
The Seahawks captured their seventh CAA title and third crown in four years last spring before falling to No. 13 South Carolina in the NCAA Regionals in Columbia, S.C.
