Seahawks Battle Griffins And Eagles In Home Nest

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by two-time Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week Janel Gamache, UNCW welcomes Canisius and North Carolina Central for a pair of weekend twinbills at Boseman Field on Friday and Saturday.

The Seahawks (9-2) play two games each day beginning on Friday, Feb. 25, at 4:30 p.m. against the Eagles (2-6) followed by the Golden Griffins (4-4). UNCW returns on Saturday for another doubleheader at 11 a.m. against the two squads.

UNCW split a twinbill against Canisius on Wednesday. The Golden Griffins used a six-run second inning to claim an 8-6 victory in Game 1.

The Seahawks walked off the second game of the day, 3-2, when pinch-runner Skylar Stockton scored on a Canisius throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

UNCW | Janel Gamache, P/1B, Sr.

Gamache is perched atop the CAA leaderboard in hits (14), home runs (4), and RBI (14). The Exeter, R.I., product has also excelled in the circle with a 1.42 ERA in 12 innings paired with 11 strikeouts.

Gamache legged her fourth career triple against the Golden Griffins in Wednesday's first game. A walk-off home run versus Toledo and a complete game shutout over Marist highlight an impressive start to her senior campaign.

Canisius | Megan Giese, P/IF, So.

Giese fired six innings with eight strikeouts in Wednesday's finale. The right-hander allowed one earned run before the Seahawks won the game in the bottom of the seventh. At the plate, Giese went 1-for-5 over the two games with an RBI double and a walk.

NCCU | Jaden Davis, P/SS, Fr.

Davis has already tossed three complete games in the circle and has hit safely in four of her first eight games to start her collegiate career. The Knightdale, N.C., product homered and fanned six batters in a 2-1 victory over Towson on Feb. 12.

NOTES: UNCW has won 18 of 20 games against NC Central all-time… The Seahawks are out-homering opponents, 9-2 … UNCW has stolen 18 bases this season … UNCW is hitting .337 (31-for-92) with runners in scoring position ...
