Softball Faces Midweek Test Against Canisius

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The hot-hitting UNCW softball team hopes to continue its strong start with a midweek doubleheader against Canisius on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (8-1) are flying high after taking four of five games over Bucknell and Marist over the weekend. UNCW outscored its opponents 32-15 in the five games for its best start in school history.

Canisius (3-3) travels east after splitting six games at the USC Upstate tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. to start its season.

Senior Janel Gamache has been at the forefront of the Seahawks' early-season resurgence. The Exeter, R.I., product was named Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week for the second time after hitting .438 with two doubles, a home run, and 7 RBI in five games.

On Saturday, Gamache went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBI while pitching a five-inning shutout with six strikeouts against the Red Foxes.

The Seahawks' potent bats will be put to the test against sophomore Megan Giese, who struck out 18 batters in 18.2 innings for the Golden Griffins. The right-hander limited opponents to a .164 average in five appearances to earn Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

UNCW's pitching staff, which ranks 36th in the country with a 1.88 team ERA, will stare down Canisius sophomore Gianna Fazzolari in the batter's box. The Newfane, N.Y., product was named MAAC Player of the Week after hitting .353 with four home runs and 7 RBI in six games.

The teams will have an off-day on Thursday before joining NC Central in a three-team weekend tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 25. The Seahawks first play at 4:30 p.m. on Friday against the Eagles.
