HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra used a 13-2 run to open the game on its way to a 56-40 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Tuesday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex.

The Seahawks, 3-14 overall and 0-7 in CAA play, dropped their seventh straight game while Hofstra, 4-12 overall and 1-7 in the circuit, picked up their first league win.

UNCW shot 24.6 percent (15-of-61) from the floor and Hofstra hit 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field.

Senior guard Carrie Gross led the Seahawks with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Graduate guard Allie Best chipped in 12 points, including a season-high four three-pointers.

Redshirt seniors Jaala Henry (15) and Jaylen Hines (12) scored a combined 27 points to pace the Pride, who picked up their third straight win against the Seahawks.

Hofstra, who never trailed, rattled off nine unanswered points to begin the game after Hines banked a layup off the right glass.

The Pride defense held the Seahawks to 1-of-12 shooting in the first quarter.

UNCW cut the lead to five, 18-13, after redshirt senior Micah Hoggatt hit a jumper with 5:37 to go in the half. The Pride responded, however, with 11 unanswered points to close out the half and took a 29-13 advantage into the locker room.

The Pride lead swelled to 20 points, 35-15, before the Seahawks battled back with five quick points, including a long-range three-pointer from Best to shrink the lead, 35-20, at the 6:49 mark in the third quarter.

The Seahawks continue their four-game conference road trip on Friday, Feb. 4, at CAA heavyweight Drexel. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
