Seahawks Conclude November With Chants

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The newly-minted Baha Mar Nassau Championship titlists make the short trek to Conway, S.C., on Wednesday when UNCW battles regional rival Coastal Carolina at 7:30 p.m. in its first appearance at the HTC Center.

The Seahawks, 5-3, swept past Missouri State, Vermont and North Texas over Thanksgiving weekend to extend their winning streak to four games. The Seahawks are playing the final game of a rigorous month of November, which has featured six contests away from North Carolina.

Now, it's on to Conway and a veteran Coastal club.

"This will be a huge road test for our team," Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach, said of the Chanticleers and longtime coach Cliff Ellis.

"I have a lot of respect for Coach Ellis and what he's accomplished in his hall of fame coaching career," said Siddle. "Preparing for his teams is always challenging. Offensively, they put tons of pressure on your transition defense with their pace of play, and their physicality on the offensive glass is an area of concern as well. Defensively, they try to keep off balance with changing defenses. Box and 1, triangle and 2, man-to-man, zone. With it being a rivalry game, this will be a fun one."

The matchup may be heard on 95.9 FM The Breeze, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro on the call, beginning at 7:15 p.m. Video is available on ESPN+.

Coastal Carolina improved to 3-2 this season by topping South Dakota, 66-59, last Saturday at home. Senior guard Jomaru Brown scored a team-high 17 points and keyed a 7-0 run to end the game to help the Chanticleers pull away in the final minute. Brown pocketed 11 of his points in the second half, including four in the closing run to spark the Chanticleers to the home victory.

Wednesday marks only the third meeting between the Seahawks and Coastal Carolina since 2007. UNCW owns an 11-2 advantage in the series, but both of those losses came in Conway.

The Seahawks are facing Coastal big man Essam Mostafa (6-9, 250, R-Jr.) for the second time. Mostafa started and played 31 minutes against the Seahawks in a 65-53 loss on Nov. 18, 2021. He scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, going 4-for-11 from the floor and adding 3-for-7 at the free throw line.

The Chanticleers stand 3-0 at home, winning by an average of 41.3 ppg. The Seahawks, on the other hand, are 3-0 in true road games, losing by an average of 23.3 ppg.

Both teams feature a balanced scoring attack. UNCW has seven players averaging in double figures, topped by sophomore guard Trazarien White's 12.0 ppg. CCU has four players collecting double figures, led by senior guard Jomaru Brown's 18.8 ppg.

Former Seahawk head coach Benny Moss serves as Associate Head Coach at Coastal Carolina. He spent four seasons on the North Carolina coast and piloted the Seahawks to a 20-win season in 2007-08, one of just seven in the school's DI tenure. He went 1-1 against CCU during his stint with the Seahawks.

The Seahawks next take a five-day breather before opening their December slate with a trio of home games vs. East Carolina (Dec. 6), Jacksonville (Dec. 10) and High Point (Dec. 18).

OPENING TIPS: UNCW picked up votes in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll: Charleston (#3), Towson (#7), Hofstra (#17)…UNCW's three losses have come to opponents with a combined 18-3 record…The Seahawks have led at intermission in four games and trailed in four contests…UNCW has been out front at the break in three of the last four outings…The Seahawks have played 10 of the current 14 schools in the Sun Belt Conference and stand 68-112 (.384) against the league…After playing nine games in November, the Seahawks will tackle only six contests in December, with four of those at Trask Coliseum.
