UNCW Halts Losing Skid With Road Win

NEWARK, Delaware – Red-shirt sophomore Caitlyn Callahan had nine kills and nine blocks to help UNCW snap a 10-match losing streak on Sunday with a five-set win over Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Seahawks, who remain in the hunt for a conference tournament berth with the road win, pushed their record to 4-17 overall and 2-10 in the CAA. UD, which dropped to 12-10 and 8-6 in the league, has already secured a berth in the upcoming postseason tournament.

UNCW opened the match with a 25-19 win, but the Blue Hens drew even with a 26-24 victory. UNCW again jumped in front with a 25-18 win in the third set, but UD forced a fifth set by taking the fourth sey, 25-22. In the final set, Delaware held a 12-10 lead, but UNCW rattled off the final five points for a 15-12 win to take the match.

Katie Lanz led a balanced UNCW offense that saw four players record at least eight kills. Lanz finished with 11 while Callahan and Brooke Hanshumaker added nine apiece. Kirsten Badowski notched eight kills in 20 attacks and fashioned a .400 hitting average.

Lanz had 11 digs to round out a double-double. Joining Lanz with double-figure digs were Ashley and Sarah Thompson with 19 and 13, respectively.

UNCW finished with a dominating 12-3 advantage in blocks as six different players had a block. Callahan's nine blocks were a season high and were one short of landing on UNCW's single-match record list.

Lani Mason, who leads the CAA in kills per set at 5.04, held match-high honors with 27 kills and added 13 digs.  Lauryn Richardson added nine kills.

UD libero Eileen Gex led all with 29 digs.

The Seahawks open a four-match homestand on Nov. 6 when they host Elon at 4 p.m.
