Seahawks Tune Up For CAAs at ECU

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – In their final appearance before the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships in two weeks, UNCW placed seventh in the 8K men's race and sixth in the 6K women's competition late Friday at the ECU Invitational.

Held at scenic Lake Kristi, site of the 2015 American Athletic Conference XC Championships and the NCAA Division I Southeast Regional XC Championships from 2002-05, the race featured 10 men's teams and nine women's entries.

"It was great to be back racing and running the distances that we'll run at the CAA Championships," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's head cross country coach. "Across the board, the teams got out great and then finished strong. We'll use the next two weeks to focus on staying strong in the middle part of the race as we start our taper to put all the pieces together at the conference meet."

Freshman Sam Bland was UNCW's top finisher for the second straight race and third time in four outings this season. The Matthews, N.C., product covered the 8K course in 26:15, good for 29th overall out of 93 entries.

"Sam continues to be a leader at practice entering competitions. His performance today is a testament to the work he's been putting in since day one," said Klaves.

Senior Kendall Hobbs paced the Seahawk women for the fourth consecutive time this fall. The Beavercreek, Ohio, runner placed 13th with a time of 22:35 on the 6K layout. There were 89 runners in the women's competition.

"Kendall continues to show her readiness to perform at big races," added Klaves."Today, we went for it and had a great effort through 5K and look forward to holding that pace for the entire 6K at the CAA Championships."­

George Washington took the team title in the men's race with 24 points, while Elon captured the women's crown with 59 points. GW's Ryan Fowkes won the men's individual title with a time of 24:18 in the 8K race and Coastal Carolina's Molly Jones was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 6K at 21:12.

The Seahawks next compete in the CAA Championships on Oct. 28, 2022, in Newark, Del.
