Seahawks Eye Record For Longest Streak

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW aims to cap a successful three-game homestand by breaking the school record for consecutive victories when defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Drexel visits Trask Coliseum on Monday night for a CAA clash.

The Seahawks, 14-5 overall and atop the CAA standings with an unblemished 8-0 mark, have reeled off 11 consecutive wins since a defeat at Jacksonville on Dec. 11, 2021. The 2015-16 club won 11 in a row from Jan. 9, 2016, to Feb. 13, 2016.

The 2021-22 team can also match the program's best CAA start with a win on Monday. The 2016-17 squad opened conference play with a 9-0 record before falling at William & Mary on Jan. 28, 207.

"Our guys are just focusing and playing with a lot of confidence right now," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's head coach. "Our guys are mentally tough. I believe in all of our guys. We celebrate every win, but we all know there's still work to do."

That blue collar work ethic has paid big dividends for the Seahawks, picked to finish ninth in the 10-team league this season. Siddle's club has proved the pundits wrong by accepting designated roles and making big stops down the stretch in each game of the streak.

UNCW came from behind once again in Saturday's tilt with Hofstra, reversing a 15-point deficit and setting the 4,000+ fans in Trask into a frenzy. The Seahawks are followed by Towson (7-2), and Delaware (6-3) in the CAA standings.

Senior guard Jaylen Sims continues to enjoy an outstanding senior season. The Charlotte product tops three Seahawks in double figures with 14.2 points per game and is adding 5.6 rebounds. Graduate guard Mike Okauru is pitching in 11.7 points and 4.0 rebounds and junior guard Shykeim Phillips is collecting 11.5 points and 3.5 boards.

Drexel, 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the CAA, is coming off a 66-62 setback to Towson at SECU Arena on Saturday. The Dragons jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first half before the Tigers stormed back to earn a split of the regular season series.

One game after facing the league's top scorer in Hofstra's Aaron Estrada, the Seahawks take on the circuit's No. 2 scorer, Drexel's Camren Wynter. Last year's CAA Tournament MVP is averaging 15.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists and pocketed 20 points in Saturday's loss at Towson.

Monday's matchup will be carried locally on The Breeze 95.9 FM and aired on the CAA's streaming partner, FloHoops.com. Play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro and color analyst Marty Feurer will be on the call.

The Seahawks next embark on a three-game road trip to Elon, William & Mary and Hofstra, beginning with the Phoenix on Thursday with a 7 p.m. tip at the Schar Center in Elon.

UNCW-DU Net Notes

The Seahawks own a 21-15 advantage in the 36-game series with the Dragons. UNCW has won seven of the last 10 meetings, but Drexel has taken three of the last four matchups.

The Seahawks are 6-3 against Drexel's Zach Spiker and have averaged 65.0 ppg against the fifth-year Dragon skipper. Drexel has collected 74.3 ppg vs. UNCW since Spiker's arrival in 2016-17.

The Seahawks have compiled a 23-18 record against four teams from the state of Pennsylvania through the years.

The Seahawks are facing Wynter for the sixth time. The versatile guard has averaged 14.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in five appearances against the Seahawks, including a 30-point explosion on Dec. 28, 2019.
