Seahawks Crack Top-10 In Season Debut

Sander Akeren tied for 23rd to lead the Seahawks in Durham

DURHAM, N.C. – Buoyed by even-par rounds from Sander Akeren and Walker Isley, UNCW finished ninth at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted at the Duke University Golf Club on Sunday.

In its season-opening appearance, UNCW edged Loyola Maryland by three strokes to finish inside the top-10.

Akeren was the top-finisher for the Seahawks, tying for 23rd overall at two-over-par for the tournament. He carded a 74 in the opening round, but rebounded with identical rounds of even-par 72's.

For Isley, his final round was the best of the weekend as he finished tied for 50th.

Nationally-ranked North Carolina won the tournament by three strokes over NC State and was 19 strokes in front of host Duke, who finished third.

Ryan Gerard of UNC earned medalist honors at 15-under for the tournament. NC State's Maximilian Steinlechner was two strokes off the lead and finished second.

The Seahawks next compete at the Battle at Briar's Creek on Sept. 20-21 on Johns Island, S.C.
