No. 13 Gamecocks Beat UNCW In NCAA Regional

Box Score COLUMBIA, South Carolina – No. 13 South Carolina used its strength at the top of the lineup to eliminate Colonial Athletic Association champion UNCW, 4-0, in a first-round match of the 2021 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on Friday at the Carolina Tennis Center.
 
The Gamecocks of the Southeastern Conference, 16-9, will meet N.C. State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the regional final. The Seahawks finished the season at 15-6.
 
In Friday's match, played in near-ideal conditions, South Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after winning the first two matches off the court in doubles. USC's No. 2 team of Jake Beasley and Toby Samuel trimmed UNCW's Dillon Gooch and Bekhzod Rasamatov, 6-3, before the No. 1 tandem of Daniel Rodrigues and Connor Thomson, 13th in the ITA's Collegiate Tennis Rankings, fashioned a 6-2 decision over No. 88 Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom.
 
The Gamecocks continued to apply the pressure in singles behind No. 54 Raphael Lambling, who blanked Rasamatov, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to give USC a 2-0 edge.
 
USC upped the score to 3-0 after Rodrigues, ranked No. 2 and playing No. 1 singles, trimmed UNCW's Bruno Caula, 6-1, 6-3. The Gamecocks then closed out the 1:58 match with a 6-3, 6-2, triumph by Samuel, ranked No. 62, over Groom at No. 3 singles.
 
UNCW is now 1-8 in NCAA play in eight trips to the NCAA Regionals. USC squared its record vs. UNCW in the NCAA Tournament at 1-1. The Seahawks earlier blanked the Gamecocks, 4-0, on May 10, 2013, in Durham.
