Seahawks Headed To CAA Tennis Finals

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Junior Bruno Caula clinched the match for the second day and the top-seeded UNCW men's tennis team recorded its second straight shutout of the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships with a 4-0 triumph over No 5 seeded James Madison early Saturday at William & Mary's Millie West Tennis Facility.

The Seahawks increased their record to 14-5 and won for the sixth time in their last seven matches. UNCW will face the winner of this afternoon's match between No. 2 Elon and No. 3 William & Mary in Sunday's title match at 1 p.m.

The Seahawks captured the doubles point for the 15th time in 19 matches, but it wasn't easy. After the No. 1 tandem of Caula and Daniel Groom coasted to a 6-1 verdict over JMU's Paul Mendoza and Holden Koons, the No. 3 team of Leonardo Sprovieri and Gabriel Hurtado edged JMU's Gonzalo Adis and William Karpinski, 6-4, to clinch the crucial point.

UNCW, which won six CAA titles from 2009-2018, then closed out the match with consecutive singles victories by Leonardo Sprovieri, Daniel Groom and Caula.

Caula, playing No. 1, cruised past JMU's Holden Koons, 6-2, 6-2, to send the Seahawks into the CAA finals for the ninth time. The Seahawks will play in the CAA championship match for the fourth consecutive year after beating JMU for the ninth time in 11 tries in the CAA Tournament.
