Seahawks Sparkle In Doubles Play

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – The UNCW women's tennis team capped the first day of action at the Navy, Blue & Gold Invitational by winning six of seven doubles matches on the sprawling campus of the U.S. Naval Academy.

In their second appearance of the fall campaign, the Seahawks went 4-2 in singles and 6-1 in doubles on the opening day of the tourney. The Seahawks are one of eight teams competing in the three-day event. In addition to UNCW and Navy, other teams participating include Connecticut, Maryland, George Washington, George Mason, Seton Hall and Towson.

Seahawk newcomers Sasha Belaya and Lauren Gish advanced to the semifinals of the Doubles Flight A draw with a pair of victories over teams from Towson and UConn. Sophomore Zoe Huffman and freshman Stela Joksimovic reached the semifinals of the Doubles Flight B bracket following a bye and a victory over Paige La and Francesca Trella of George Mason.

Play continues on Saturday at noon and runs through Sunday.
