No. 1 UNC Blanks Seahawks In Spring Opener

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – Top-ranked North Carolina swept past visiting UNCW, 7-0, in the spring dual match debut for both women's tennis teams on Tuesday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
 
The Tar Heels of the Atlantic Coast Conference, ranked No. 1 in the Oracle ITA NCAA Division I rankings, claimed all three doubles matches for the early point and then surrendered just seven games in taking the six singles matches.

"I was very proud of our team's effort," said Head Coach Hans Olsen. "We fought for every point. We have lot to take away from this match. North Carolina was the better team today."
 
The Seahawks, playing the first of 16 regular season matches, were challenging a No. 1-ranked team for the first time. Graduate student Celeste Matute played in her 46th career match for the Seahawks, while William & Mary transfer Charlotte Madison made her first appearance for the Seahawks.
 
UNCW's roster of 11 netters features two graduate students, four seniors, one junior, five sophomores and one freshman.
 
The Seahawks return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 30, when N.C. Central visits the UNCW courts for a 1 p.m. match. The Tar Heels entertain ACC rival Notre Dame on Friday, Jan. 22, in a 2 p.m. match.
