Siddle Faces Alma Mater For First Time

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – It wasn't that long ago that new UNCW head men's basketball coach Takayo Siddle was putting up jump shots with Gardner-Webb emblazoned across his chest. Fast foward to this November when he'll suit up for the first time against his alma mater at Trask Coliseum.

gwu_graphicThe Seahawks and Bulldogs will battle on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, in the middle part of a three-game slate for the host team in a multi-team event in the Port City. Navy and Morgan State are also on tap for the yet to be named tournament.

Siddle, who grew up in Eden, N.C., attended prep school at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., before landing in Boiling Springs, N.C., with the Bulldogs. He found a home at GWU and played 116 games with 33 starts in four seasons for Coach Rick Scruggs.

Siddle, who scored 609 points and dished out 231 assists over four years with the Bulldogs, turned in arguably his most memorable game on Nov. 8, 2007, early in his junior campaign. He scored eight points as the Bulldogs shocked 20th-ranked Kentucky, 84-68, to advance to the final four of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in Madison Square Garden.

After his collegiate career, Siddle spent one year with Kevin Keatts at Hargrave before returning to Gardner-Webb for four seasons under Chris Holtmann and Tim Craft.

UNCW-Gardner Webb Series Notes

  • While separated by just 260 miles, UNCW and Gardner Webb have only played once on the hardwood. The Bulldogs cruised past the Seahawks, 81-72, on Nov. 24, 2018, in the inaugural VisitCurrituckOBX.com Battle In The Blue Ridge Tournament in Asheville, N.C.
  • Gardner-Webb used a different twist out of its playbook – accurate three-point shooting – to fashion an early lead before holding on to slip past UNCW at the U.S. Cellular Center.
  • Coach Siddle served as an assistant coach for three years under Chris Holtmann (2011-13) and one season under Tim Craft (2014) at GWU.
  • The Bulldogs have been members of the Big South Conference since 2008. The Seahawks have played eight of the 10 schools in the Big South, compiling a 112-83 (.574) record against the current schools.
  • The Bulldogs return one senior in 2020-21 and the 15-man roster features players from eight different states and five countries.
  • Senior playmaker Jaheam Cornwall is the team's top returning scorer at 13.1 ppg and dished out 105 assists one year ago.
  • The No. 3-seeded Bulldogs lost to eventual champion and No. 2 seed Winthrop, 78-66, in the semifinals of the 2020 Hercules Tires Big South Men's Basketball Championship at Radford, Va.
