Men's Hoops Earns Eighth Straight Win

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – The UNCW men's basketball team rattled off an 11-2 run midway through the second half to key a 70-63 win over Louisiana on Saturday afternoon at the Cajundome.

The Seahawks (9-1) ran their win streak to eight games and achieved the second-best start in school history after the 2016-17 championship opened the year at 11-1. The Ragin' Cajuns fell to 1-9 with their eighth straight loss.

Senior Christian May achieved a team-high 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting from three-point range. The Edinburg, Va., native was joined in double figures by Madison Durr (14), Nolan Hodge (11) and Patrick Wessler (10).

Cajuns guard Jaxon Olvera (21) and Dorian Finister (16) combined for 37 points on 12-of-29 shooting.

The back-and-forth contest featured nine ties and 12 lead changes with neither team leading more than eight points.

With the game tied 54-54 with 10:45 left to play, May drained a three with two seconds on the shot clock that kick-started a 6-0 spurt that gave UNCW the lead for good.

The Seahawks hit 10 of their first 14 shots to take a 26-18 lead after the second media timeout on the heels of a go-ahead 12-1 run over 2:12 of play.

With six minutes left in the first half, Louisiana flipped the advantage with nine unanswered points and maintained it until a May three with 45 seconds to go gave the Seahawks a narrow 39-38 lead at halftime.

UNCW next travels to Valparaiso for a Saturday afternoon contest following final exams.
