Hodge Goes for 28 as Seahawks Rally at Valpo

VALPARAISO, Indiana – UNCW seniors Nolan Hodge and Noah Ross combined for 46 points and junior Gavin Walsh contributed his first double-double of the season to help the Seahawks overcome a nine-point halftime deficit to claim a 73-70 win at Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

The surging Seahawks upped their record to 10-1 with their ninth straight victory. The Beacons fell to 6-4 in just the third meeting between the schools and first since 2018.

UNCW, trailing 40-31 at halftime, overcame at least a nine-point halftime deficit to win for the first time since Nov. 26, 2022, vs. Vermont at the Baha Mar Nassau Championship in The Bahamas.

Hodge notched a career-high 28 points with 16 in the second half. Ross chipped in 12 of his season-high 18 points in the first half while Walsh authored his first double-double as a Seahawk with 11 points and a season-high 14 rebounds, including a career-high nine offensive boards.

Valpo's JT Pettigrew also added a double-double with a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Justus McNair added 15 and Isaiah Barnes contributed 10.

UNCW scored the game's first six points en route to leading for the first six-and-a-half minutes of play.

Valpo, trailing 13-12 with 12:06 to go, then rattled off a 14-3 spurt, including nine points by Barnes to take a double-digit lead, 26-15, with 8:16 to go.

A 9-0 UNCW spurt brought it within a single-possession, 31-28, with 3:08 left before halftime, but the Beacons responded with seven unanswered points in the final minutes to hold a 40-31 lead at the break.

Hodge jump-started a lead-changing 9-0 stretch in the second half to give the Seahawks a brief 48-47 edge at 14:23 before the teams battled through a one-possession contest the next 12 minutes until a pair of Madison Durr free throws put UNCW up four, 68-64, with 2:05 to go.

Hodge converted three free throws in the final 12 seconds and the Seahawks held the Beacons scoreless from the field over the final 4:21, including an off-balanced three-point attempt at the buzzer for the win.

UNCW returns home on Saturday, Dec. 20 vs. Howard at 2 p.m.
