Seahawks Win Third Straight Match

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team dominated the doubles point and swept five of six singles matches to cruise past Campbell, 6-1, for its third consecutive victory on Saturday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.

The Seahawks evened their record at 3-3 this spring and closed out an unblemished three-match home stand. The Camels stand 0-2 on the young season.

The Seahawks started quickly early Saturday as temperatures struggled to get out of the 40s. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Cole Groetsch and Dillon Gooch clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 decision over Campbell's Bastien Huon and Ondrej Labik.

After victories by Daniel Groom at No. 3 singles and Davide Innocenti at the No. 4 position, senior Michael Copeland clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 verdict against CU's Robin Angles.

"Our group took another step forward with today's win over a very talented Campbell team," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's 13-year head coach. "We are making strides with how we want to compete on match day and I thought we did an excellent job today.

"We got off to a great start in doubles with two very clean performances and the momentum carried into singles. Cole Groetsch got his first dual match singles win for us and we continue to be impressed with the progress he is making.

"Bruno Caula had a good three-set win after dropping a lopsided first set…he played a great mental match. The middle of our lineup has been super strong and Innocenti, Groom and Copeland continue to put in rock solid performances.  We feel very good as we prepare to play two good teams next week on the road."

The Seahawks travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for their next match on Friday, Feb. 14, vs. UNF before wrapping up the trip at CAA rival Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 16.
