Matute, Merrill Collect Tennis Wins

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Visiting Appalachian State swept the doubles point and added four singles wins to trim UNCW, 5-2, in the women's tennis home debut for the Seahawks on Saturday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.
 
The Mountaineers, opening the spring season with their fourth consecutive match on the road, improved to 3-2. The Seahawks dropped to 2-3.
 
Senior Celeste Matute and freshman Sarah Merrill picked up the singles victories for the Seahawks. Matute, from Islip, N.Y., outlasted Appalachian's Kate Earnhardt, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5), at No. 2 singles, while Merrill rallied to beat Virginia Poggi, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 4 position.
 
The Seahawks next travel to Buies Creek, N.C., on Thursday for a 2 p.m. match at longtime foe Campbell.
