Seahawks, Camels Clash In Matinee

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Longtime state foes UNCW and Campbell kick off Christmas week with a Monday matinee at Gore Arena in Buies Creek.

The Seahawks stand 4-3 after handing host Norfolk State an 80-72 loss last Friday at Echols Hall in Norfolk. The Camels, 4-2, have lost two in a row following a 69-50 defeat on Saturday to N.C. State at PNC Arena in Raleigh.

The 1 p.m. matchup will be carried locally on The Breeze, 95.9 FM, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro providing the action. The game may also be heard worldwide on the station's website, www.959thebreeze.com and is being carried digitally on ESPN+.

"We definitely have some confidence," Head Coach Takayo Siddle said after Friday's key road win. "Monday will be a completely different game. Campbell is a pattern team. It's a different scout. We're going to have to lock in and shore up some things defensively."

The Seahawks and Camels are busy concluding with their non-conference schedules before the Christmas holiday, with each club navigating a challenging stretch of three games in six days.

UNCW notched its second road win of the new season with the verdict at Norfolk State. With four players in deep foul trouble and the game hanging in the balance, the Seahawks rode yeoman efforts from several players to a key win in their first visit to Virginia's Tidewater region since 2014.

Sophomore guard Joe Pridgen anchored four players in double figures vs. NSU with a career-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds for his second double-double since joining the team on Dec. 7. Senior guard Ty Gadsden and sophomore guard Jake Boggs chipped in 18 points apiece and senior forward John Bowen collected 10 points and six rebounds for the Seahawks, who nailed down their second road win of the campaign.

CU, meanwhile, was locked in a tight contest with NC State before the Wolfpack pulled away midway through the second half. Jericole Hellems scored 19 points and NC State used a 19-1 run late at PNC Arena. Campbell shot 40.4 percent (19-47) from the field, just 2-of-17 beyond the arc and hit only 10-of-17 free throws.

Monday's matinee marks the 106th meeting between the two rivals. It's the longest series on record for the Seahawks, who lead the series, 61-44, including a commanding 41-12 advantage in NCAA Division I play. The Seahawks have won four of the last five pairings and six of the last 10 clashes between the two programs.

In last year's installment of the series, UNCW scored nine of the first 11 points in overtime and held on to edge Campbell, 81-76, on Nov. 12, 2019, at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks won for the first time in six tries in overtime against the Camels when Jaylen Sims scored nine of his team-high 15 points in the extra session. Campbell had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but the Camels missed the second of two free throws with 2.5 seconds on the clock.

UNCW has had limited success in Campbell's five-year-old facility. The Seahawks are 1-4 at Gore Arena, with the lone victory coming on Dec. 14, 2016, in a 96-75 beatdown by the eventual CAA champions.

The Seahawks have played six of their seven games in 2020-21 away from the coast. UNCW stands 3-3 away from home, including 2-2 in true road outings.

The Seahawks put the finishing touches on the non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 23, when MEAC member Delaware State pays a visit to Trask Coliseum for the first meeting between the two schools. Tip is set for noon.

Seahawk Storylines

In the last game between the two teams at Gore Arena on Nov. 6, 2018,, senior guard Chris Clemons scored all 15 points of his 44 points in overtime to lift Campbell past UNCW, 97-93. In a see-saw season opener, Campbell survived 20 lead changes to knock off the Seahawks. Clemons went 12-for-24 from the floor and 14-of-16 at the charity stripe in the back and forth contest.

Six games in the series have been decided in overtime, including the last two pairings

The Seahawks have played eight of the 11 schools in the Big South Conference, compiling a 112-83 record (.574) against the circuit.

UNCW owns a 5-2 record against Campbell's Kevin McGeehan in seven meetings, but stands 1-4 vs. the Camel skipper at Gore Arena.

The Seahawks and Camels have two common opponents in 2020-21. Both teams walloped NAIA St. Andrews in recent weeks. Campbell cruised to an 85-51 victory in the season opener on Nov. 30 in Buies Creek, while the Seahawks steamrolled the Knights, 116-66, on Dec. 9 at Trask Coliseum. Campbell also dropped a 66-56 decision at Elon last Wednesday at the Schar Center.
