No. 38 UCSB Trims No. 80 UNCW

LOS ANGELES, California – No. 38 Cal Santa Barbara bounced back from surrendering the doubles point with four singles victories to trim No. 80 UNCW, 4-1, in the consolation match of day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's Tennis Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday in Los Angeles.
 
The teams wrapped up their appearances at Southern Cal's Marks Tennis Stadium. Host USC, ranked third nationally, won the event with a 4-0 decision over Santa Clara to advance to next month's National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc.
 
UNCW stands 0-3 on the season following closes to Duke, No. 3 Southern Cal and No. 38 UCSB. The Seahawks return to the east coast to begin a three-match home stand on Friday, Jan. 31, with a 1 p.m. match vs. Wofford at the UNCW Tennis Courts. UCSB now stands 1-3 on the season following the ITA event.
 
UNCW's 36th-ranked doubles tandem of Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom collected the team's only point on Saturday, narrowly defeating UCSB's Victor Krustev and Joseph Rotheram, 7-6 (4).
 
It marked UNCW's eighth appearance in the invitation-only event and their third trip to the City of Angels. The Seahawks also played in the 2012 and 2015 events hosted by USC.
 
Sixty teams competed at 15 regional sites in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Four teams participated at each regional, with the winners advancing to the nationals.
