ELON, North Carolina – The UNCW men pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep of the Men's Long Jump competition to get the Seahawks off to a strong start on the opening day of the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships on Friday at Elon's Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex.

In the team standings, William & Mary holds a slim lead in the men's standings and Northeastern inched ahead in the women's competition.

Led by senior
Moe Holmes, the Seahawks dominated the Men's Long Jump early Friday as Holmes, sophomore
Da'Rod Crutchfield and freshman
Owen Pelletier turned in PR performances. Holmes, the gold medalist two years ago, returned to the top of the podium with a jump of career-best leap of 24-02.50. Crutchfield earned silver by jumping 23-03.50 and Pelletier captured bronze at 22-11.25.

Holmes moved into a tie for third all-time on the school's medal list with eight in his career. The Washington, D.C., product is also tied for second with five golds.

"We started the day off great by sweeping the long jump," said
Austin Davis, UNCW's first-year head coach. "They all stepped up and performed well when they needed to. That got the day off well.
Â
"We're running our best times, we're having championship performances and we're beating people. We're putting ourselves in a position to score well on the final day of competition."

In other action, senior
Nathan Rodgers leads the field in the Men's Decathlon with 3,342 points after five events. He is 164 points ahead of Northeastern's Kurt Robakiewwicz with five events remaining on Saturday. Rodgers won the 100 Meters, Long Jump and 400 Meters events on the first day.

Distance specialist
Calvin Daughtry turned in an inspiring performance in the late evening hours, winning a bronze medal in the 10,000 Meters with a time of 32:40.14. He kept up with the front of the pack throughout the race and was edged at the end for second place.

On the women's side, sophomore
Makiya Spencer raced to fifth place and reached the finals in the Women's 400 Meter Hurdles Prelims with a time of 1:03.59. Junior
Jahnae Bowman also made the finals of the 100 Meters by clocking a 12.37.

Action continues on Saturday with a full slate of events, beginning with the 110m Hurdles in the Men's Decathlon and the Women's Shot Put at 10 a.m. The running events kick off at 10:20 a.m. with the Women's 3,000 Meter Steeplechase.
