31783Green finished fifth in his heat, but advanced to Friday's round of 24 on the basis of his fast time. The top three in each heat and the next six best times stayed alive. Green's 51.44 speed qualified him the final spot in the quarters.

"It was the deepest heat, but E.J got out strong and set himself up well for the last two hurdles," said Austin Davis, UNCW's Head Track & Field Coach. "He's been really working on closing hard and he did just that."

Green, from Greensboro, N.C., and the rest of the remaining field will race at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.

Five out of the eight runners in Green's heat qualified for the quarters. CAA champion David Adams of Northeastern advanced to Friday's race after taking fourth place ahead of Green in the fourth heat.

Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, June 5-8. The West Preliminary Round is being staged at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
