Seahawks Sail Into CAA Semifinals

BURLINGTON, North Carolina – Two-time defending champion and No. 1 seed UNCW bounced No. 8 Delaware, 4-0, in one of four quarterfinal matches in the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Tennis Championships early Thursday at the Burlington Tennis Center.
 
The Seahawks increased their record to 11-10 this season and face #4 James Madison in the CAA semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. The Blue Hens finished their season with a 14-14 scorecard.
 
UNCW, seeking its seventh CAA title, is now 8-0 all-time vs. the Blue Hens and moved to 4-0 against conference opponents this season.
 
The Seahawks shut out the Blue Hens in the CAA Championship for the fourth time in the last five years with superior depth up and down the lineup.
 
UNCW won the doubles point for the seventh time this season after the No. 3 tandem of Michael Copeland and Dillon Gooch trimmed UD's Laurenz Franklin and Luis Molina, 6-4.
 
Daniel Groom (No. 3), Bruno Caula (No. 4) and Leo Sprovieri (No. 6) then reeled off three quick singles victories to nail down the win. Sprovieri, a freshman from Corrientes, Argentina clinched the match for the second time this season with a 6-0, 6-2, decision against Milo Nagle.
 
The Seahawks were leading in the three remaining singles matched when play was stopped.
 
UNCW and JMU will battle Friday after the Dukes took down #5 Charleston, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. The Seahawks defeated the Dukes, 5-2, back on March 31 at the UNCW courts and stand 6-2 against JMU in CAA Tournament matches.
