Seahawks Open CAA Tourney With Win

ELON, North Carolina – The doubles team of Sabrina Barisano and Maddy Muller-Hughes set the tone with its 15th victory of the season and the rest of the club followed suit as the UNCW women's tennis team downed No. 9 seeded Hofstra, 4-2, in the opening match of the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships early Wednesday.
 
The Seahawks, the No. 8 seed, improved to 9-11 overall after winning the critical doubles point and adding three singles victories at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Hofstra ended its season with a 12-11 record.
 
UNCW, which defeated the Pride just 10 days ago in Hempstead, N.Y., improved to 8-0 lifetime against Hofstra and advances to tomorrow's quarterfinal round against top-seeded William & Mary at 9 a.m.
 
Barisano and Muller-Hughes cruised past Hofstra's Sarah Herndon and Jasmine King, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles to start the match and hike their record to 15-4 this spring. UNCW's No. 3 tandem of Lea Dubois-Rebiere and Rachel Marthinsen (UNCW) then clinched the point with a 6-3 verdict over Ronia Dolabany and Odessa Stork.
 
Marthinsen and Barisano extended the margin to 3-0 with victories at No. 6 and No. 2 singles. Marthinsen routed Ronia Dolabany, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 6 position and Barisano raised her record to 12-5 with a 6-1, 6-4, decision against King at No. 2 singles.
 
Sophomore Rishika Ravindran clinched the match for the first time this season by halting Stork, 7-6 (4), 6-3, at No. 5 singles.
