Seahawks No. 1 Seed In CAA Men's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW will attempt to become the first team in 15 years to win three consecutive conference titles when the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships convene early Thursday in Elon, N.C.

The Seahawks picked up the top seed for the seventh time overall and the sixth time in the last seven years when the pairings were announced by the league office late Monday.

UNCW captured CAA crowns in 2017 and 2018 and opens defense of its back-to-back titles at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, with a pairing against No. 8 Delaware at the Burlington Tennis Center. The winner will face the winner of the James Madison vs. Charleston match on Friday, April 19, at 2 p.m.

"This is our favorite time of year and we're looking forward to starting the tournament," said veteran UNCW head coach Mait DuBois. "The depth of our conference is really getting stronger and there are a lot of teams playing very well.

"Last year, there was at least one upset in every round and I think the parity is even closer this year. Delaware has an excellent new head coach and he's really moving their program forward.  I think their squad this year is one of the best they've had and we're busy preparing for a very good first round opponent."

The Seahawks feature five freshmen, one sophomore, four juniors and two seniors on a team that faced three nationally-ranked opponents during the dual match season.

Eight teams will vie for the men's hardware on Thursday through Saturday. Quarterfinal action starts at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, followed by the semifinals on Friday, April 19, and the championship match on Saturday, April 20.

UNCW closed out the regular season with a 10-10 record and defeated all three CAA teams on its schedule in Wilmington. The Seahawks beat Elon, 6-1, on Feb. 15, blanked Drexel, 7-0, on Mar. 29 and topped James Madison, 5-2, on Mar. 31.

UNCW has won six consecutive CAA Tournament matches dating back to 4-3 loss to Charleston in the championship match on April 24, 2016. The Seahawks are 29-26 lifetime in CAA Tournament matches and have played in seven of the last 10 conference championship matches.

Admission is free and the champion earns the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. For more information, visit the tennis championship page on CAASports.com.
