Barisano Boosts Seahawks, 4-3

WILMINGTON, North Carolina Sabrina Barisano outlasted Katka Majorova in three sets to lift the UNCW women's tennis team past Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel, 4-3, in a late-season conference match early Friday at the UNCW courts.

Playing in near-perfect conditions before a large gathering of alumni, the Seahawks improved to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the CAA with the victory. Drexel, which dropped its fourth straight match and second on its southern swing to UNCW and Charleston, stands 7-8 and 0-2.

UNCW won the important doubles point and jumped out front, 3-1, before the Dragons rallied to knot the score with a pair of singles victories, setting up Barisano's heroics.

With the score squared at 3-all, Barisano stormed back from a one-set deficit for a clutch 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, verdict over Majorova to clinch the match for the first time this season. The Yonkers, N.Y., senior raised her singles record to 10-4 this spring and helped the Seahawks stay perfect all-time vs. Drexel with a 9-0 mark.

In doubles action, Rachel Marthinsen and Lea Dubois-Rebiere trimmed Majorova and Marta Martinez, 6-2, at the No. 3 position to help the Seahawks notch the early point for the sixth time this year.

Junior Celeste Matute (No. 5) and Marthinsen (No. 6) won the first two matches off the court in singles to stake the Seahawks to a 3-0 cushion before the Dragons rallied.

The Seahawks, who have just four matches remaining in the regular season, open a three-match road trip on Thursday, April 4, by taking on former CAA rival George Mason at 3:30 p.m. in Fairfax, Va.
