Barisano, Seahawks Win Fourth Straight

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior Sabrina Barisano remained unbeaten in singles as the streaking UNCW women's tennis team captured its fourth consecutive match early Sunday with a narrow 4-3 decision over longtime state foe Campbell at the UNCW Courts.

The Seahawks, tackling the final outing of three non-conference matches in four days, pushed their record to 4-2 this spring. Campbell, out of the Big South Conference, dipped to 2-4 this spring.

UNCW captured the doubles point and then claimed matches at the No 1, 3 and 4 positions to improve to 9-11 lifetime against the Camels.

In doubles, the top tandem of Barisano and Maddy Muller-Hughes needed just 24 minutes to sweep past CU's Lea Cutura and Alexandra Nicoara, 6-0, and improve to 5-1 in doubles this spring. After falling at No. 2 doubles, UNCW's No. 3 team of Lea Dubois-Rebiere and Rachel Marthinsen clinched the early point with a 6-3 decision over Ana Castillo and Inma Ramon. It was the fourth time the Seahawks have won the doubles point in six matches.

Barisano got things going in singles by cruising past Cutura, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles to move to 6-0 this spring. Seahawk sophomore Lea Dubois-Rebiere then increased the score to 3-0 by trimming CU's Nicoara, 7-5, 6-1. Muller-Hughes clinched the match with a hard-earned 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph against Ana Castillo at the top of the lineup to raise her record to 5-0 in singles this year.

The Seahawks stand 21-14 in singles and 9-7 in doubles on the young season.

Coach Hans Olsen's squad breaks for 12 days before embarking on a three-match road trip, starting with a Feb. 22 test at CAA rival Charleston. The Seahawks play six of their next seven matches away from home.
