Seahawks, Camels Meet For 105th Time

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The familiar names – Devontae Cacok and Chris Clemons – have moved on to the next level, but the rivalry remains as longtime foes UNCW and Campbell hook up again on the basketball court Tuesday night (Nov. 12, 2019) at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks (1-1) and Camels (2-0) meet at 7 p.m. in the 105th installment of the series. The contest ties on a bow on a season-opening three-game home stand for the Seahawks, who have their road opener this weekend at Davidson.

The matchup will be produced by the Seahawk Digital Network, aired on FloSports and carried over the air on The Breeze, 95.9 FM, locally. Mike Vaccaro and Marty Feurer will have the call. The broadcast can also be heard on the station's website, www.959thebreeze.com.

"Chris Clemons scored a lot of points for them and now they're doing it by committee like we are with the rebounding side of things," said third-year UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath. "They're starting to figure out what they can and can't do. They run a nice open offense. They're going to continue to run what they run, but they're not going to have that ultimate scoring machine like they've had the last couple years.

"They're going to be just as competitive as they have been on the defensive end. We expect a tough battle."

Both teams enter Tuesday's matchup with two games under their belt. UNCW walloped Johnson & Wales, 103-83, in the season opener one week ago before dropping a 79-62 verdict to No. 9 North Carolina last Friday in the Tar Heels' first appearance at Trask Coliseum. Campbell edged Coastal Carolina, 75-74, in its season debut and throttled Central Penn, 101-47, on Friday at Gore Arena in Buies Creek.

The Seahawks are averaging a robust 82.5 points per game through two outings, with sophomore guard Jaylen Sims (15.5) and freshman guard Shykeim Phillips (11.5) collecting double digits. Six different players have scored in double figures in the first two contests for the Seahawks.

The Camels have connected on 46.8 percent of their field goal attempts en route to 88.0 ppg after two contests. Senior guard Cory Gensler (12.0), freshman forward Jesus Carralero (10.5) and sophomore guard Cedrick Henderson, Jr., (10.0) give Coach Kevin McGeehan's club a balanced attack.

Net Notes
  • The UNCW-CU rivalry is the longest series on record for the Seahawks - by far. UNCW and Campbell are lacing it up for the 105th time. George Mason is the second oldest rivalry (69 games) for the Seahawks.
  • Tuesday marks the 105th meeting between the two longtime rivals since the series began in the fall of 1952. UNCW leads the all-time series, 60-44, including a 38-14 record in Wilmington and a commanding 40-12 advantage in NCAA Division I play. The Seahawks have won three of the last four pairings and six of the last 10 clashes between the two rivals.
  • UNCW stands 24-2 against CU at Trask Coliseum. The Camels have lost nine in a row to the Seahawks in Wilmington. CU's last victory in Trask came on Dec. 16, 1995, with a 74-52 triumph.
  • Clemons scored all 15 points of his 44 points in overtime to lift Campbell past UNCW, 97-93, in the last pairing between the two eastern North Carolina foes on Nov. 6, 2018. In a see-saw season opener in Buies Creek, Campbell led for 25:54 and survived 20 lead changes to knock off the Seahawks. Clemons went 12-for-24 from the floor and 14-of-16 at the charity stripe in the see-saw contest.
  • In the last meeting between the two teams in Wilmington, guards Jordon Talley and Jaylen Fornes anchored four players in double figures with 18 points apiece to fuel UNCW past Campbell, 88-84, on Nov. 18, 2017. The Seahawks led by three points at halftime, 37-34, and trailed by seven points with 10 minutes remaining before rallying. Talley finished with his second straight double-double on 18 points and 14 assists. Guard Marcus Burk exploded for a career-best 33 points for Campbell.
  • The Seahawks have played eight of the 11 schools in the Big South Conference and have compiled a 111-83 record (.572) against the circuit.
  • The clubs are retooling after losing key standouts. Cacok played in 129 games over four seasons for the Seahawks and the First-Team All-CAA performer became the first player in NCAA history to lead the nation in three separate statistical categories in three consecutive seasons. Clemons led all D-I players with 30.1 ppg in 2018-19 and finished third all-time in NCAA D-I history with 3,225 points.
  • Tuesday is Military Appreciation Night. The game is being sponsored by the North Carolina Army National Guard. An oversized U.S. flag will be unfurled during the national anthem.
