Baseball Preview: #10 East Carolina

5/8/2018 7:51:00 PM

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW returns to Brooks Field, albeit briefly, on Wednesday when it hosts nationally-ranked East Carolina in the second game of the annual home-and-home series between the two programs. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

East Carolina, which is ranked as high as 10th in the national polls, edged the Seahawks, 6-4, earlier this season in Greenville.

Freshman righthander Landen Roupp will make the start for the Seahawks while ECU counters with lefthander Jake Agnos.

The Seahawks visit Boston this weekend for a three-game series at CAA front-runner Northeastern. The series opens with a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday.

THINGS TO KNOW
  • The Seahawks begin a daunting stretch of their schedule as they host nationally-ranked East Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. … The remaining opponents are either ranked or at the top of their conferences (UNC, Northeastern, Col. of Charleston)
  • UNCW enters the midweek conference coming off a three-game sweep of James Madison in Harrisonburg … The Seahawks won a pair of one-run contests to earn the series victory and then finished off the sweep with a 5-2 win on Sunday … It was UNCW's first sweep in Harrisonburg since the 2008 season
  • Mason Berne was named CAA Player-of-the-Week for a second time this season … The senior hit .429 on the weekend with a double, home run and drove in six runs … His three run homer in the middle game broke a 3-all deadlock in UNCW's 7-6 win … Berne also extended his consecutive games reaching safely to 40 games and his current hitting streak to eight
  • The bullpen was credited with the win in all three games over the weekend to give it 20 wins on the season
  • East Carolina enters the game ranked as high as 10th in the national polls and is tied for second in the American Athletic Conference … The Pirates swept Tulane in New Orleans last weekend
  • UNCW visits Northeastern this weekend in a showdown with the Colonial Athletic Association leaders … The Huskies, at 14-4 in the league, hold a 1 1/2 lead on second-place Charleston and three-game on the Seahawks
  • UNCW closes out the regular season next week with home games against North Carolina (May 15) and Charleston (May 17-19)
  • Seahawk Head Coach Mark Scalf has 899 career wins entering Wednesday's game
