WILMINGTON, North Carolina –
After three months of training and competition, the UNCW men's and women's track and field teams travel to Williamsburg, Va., this week for the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Championships.

The CAA meet runs Friday and Saturday, May 4-5, 2018, at William & Mary's Zable Stadium. Conditions are expected to be warm in Williamsburg, with possible thunderstorms on Saturday.

"Our goal is mainly to score more points than we did last year," said third-year UNCW Head Coach Layne Schwier. "We want to go up there and perform the best we can individually. That's how we will judge how well we do."

The Seahawks finished third in the men's standings and eighth in the women's competition last year on a cool, breezy weekend on the University of Delaware campus. Northeastern captured the its third consecutive men's championship by edging William & Mary and Towson won its first women's title over two-time defending champion Elon.

The Seahawks collected three golds, one silver and five bronze on the final day of last year's meet and closed with five first-place finishes in the two-day meet.

The Seahawks will carry 22 women and 17 men to the meet this year. Three teams will compete on the men's side (UNCW, Northeastern, William & Mary), while eight (UNCW, Charleston, Delaware, Elon, James Madison, Northeastern, Towson, William & Mary) will battle in the women's competition.

The Seahawks have participated in six meets this spring, including the Duke Invitational two weeks ago in Durham.

Sophomore sprinter R.J. Russell is the favorite in the Men's 400 Meters and owns the fastest time in the CAA this season. Another sophomore, high jumper Dylan Wood, has the top jump in the conference as well.

Three other student-athletes – E.J. Green (Hurdles), Nathan Rodgers (Decathlon) and Caleb Mathis (Long Jump) – could contend in their events as well.

On the women's side, the team features mostly freshmen, but Schwier is hoping for some solid finishes to wrap up the season.

Junior Courtney Cefalo won silver at last year's meet in the Women's Long Jump and should be a strong bet to earn All-CAA honors again. Freshman Sarah Timberlake is seeded second in the Women's High Jump.

Senior thrower Alexis Dickerson is seeded fourth in the Women's Discus, while freshman Mikaya Spencer (400 Hurdles) and Jahnae Bowman (100 Meters) could break into the top echelon.
