Cougars Slip Past Seahawks In CAA Match

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Charleston rallied from an early deficit to slip past UNCW, 4-3, in a Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis match on Saturday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Cougars improved to 16-10 overall and 2-1 in CAA action with the victory. The Seahawks dipped to 1-11 and 0-3 in league play.
 
UNCW won the doubles point to get off to a quick start following victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The two clubs split the first two matches off the court in doubles before UNCW's No. 3 tandem of Xandra Fougner and Rishika Ravindran defeated CofC's Turner Yates and Laura Arciniegas, 6-4.
 
CofC stormed back in singles, however, and took four of the six matches to notch the conference win, including a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1, victory by Yates at No. 5 singles for the clincher.
 
Fougner, one of two Seahawk seniors honored prior to the match, picked up a pair of victories on the day. She tacked on a hard-earned 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 verdict over CofC's Helena Nyikos at No. 1 singles for a memorable senior day.
 
The Seahawks play their regular season finale early Sunday when Towson visits for an 11 a.m. match at the UNCW courts.
