Seahawks Remain Unbeaten At Home

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Agustin Savarino clinched the match for the first time this season to lift the UNCW men's tennis team past visiting Bryant, 4-3, late Friday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.

The Seahawks, opening a five-match home stand, won their third consecutive match to hike their record to 9-2. Bryant dropped its third in a row and fell to 7-14.

After taking the early doubles point, the Seahawks trailed, 3-2, in singles before sophomore Michael Copeland squared the match with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 verdict over Bryant's Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia at No. 4 singles.

With the match on the line, Savarino, from Mar del Plata, Argentina, completed a comeback against Luke Lorenz to win, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, and give the Seahawks their sixth home victory in as many matches this season. UNCW also improved to 4-1 in matches decided by one point this spring.

"We were lucky to survive today," said veteran UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "Bryant played an exceptional match and I have a lot of respect for the way they competed today. The scores speak for themselves, with every singles match going three sets.

"We were fortunate to get a doubles match and singles match after being down match points, and that was what swung it in our favor. Anytime you have your backs against the wall and come out ahead, it's a good thing for your team. We hope to take a lot from this one."

The Seahawks captured the critical doubles point for the fifth straight match by rallying from behind with the victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

After the Bulldogs took the No. 1 doubles match, UNCW's Andres Torres and Michael Morphy teamed up for a 7-5 victory over Bryant's Jorge Ortiz-Garcia and Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia at the No. 2 slot. UNCW's No. 3 tandem of Savarino and Copeland then nailed down the point by edging Lorenz and Grant Pertile, 7-6.

The Seahawks continue their lengthy stay at home by playing the second of three matches in the UNCW Spring Invitational on Saturday, March 17, against UT-Chattanooga at 2 p.m. UNCW then concludes a busy stretch on Sunday with another 2 p.m. match against UNC Greensboro.
