Seahawks Push Streak To Five Matches

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 4-3 verdict over visiting Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks improved to 5-1 on the young season by winning their fourth match in a six-match home stand. The Chanticleers now stand 3-3.

UNCW dropped the early doubles point, but bounced back with four singles victories. Sophomore Michael Copeland delivered the clincher for the second time this spring at No. 4 singles after rallying from behind for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision over Coastal's Lawrence Perrin.

Ignasi de Rueda (No. 2), Agustin Savarino (No. 3) and Daniel Groom (No. 6) also registered singles wins for the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions.

"Today was an excellent tennis match and I'm very proud that we were able to come out on top," said veteran UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "Coastal is a very deep team and they really fought hard. Five of the six singles matches went three sets and it came down to just a few big points.

"The turning point was Michael (Copeland) fighting back from a set down to clinch the match for us and Daniel (Groom) coming back from 4-0 down in the third set to get a huge point. Coastal has an excellent team and I know they will do very well this year."

The Seahawks continue their long home stand on Saturday, Feb. 24, with a 1 p.m. match against Longwood.
