Softball Preview: Charlotte First Pitch Classic

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW embarks on its 2018 softball schedule this weekend by participating in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic. The Seahawks will join the host 49ers along with Dayton and Radford for the three-day event.

The Seahawks, who are coming off a record-setting season a year ago, welcome back 17 letter winners from last year's team, including seven starters. UNCW also welcomes back a majority of its pitching staff from a year ago, which combined to fashion a 2.56 earned run average.

Senior Sarah Davis anchors the Seahawks in the circle after earning a team-high 16 wins last year with a 3.14 earned run average. The Burlington, N.C., product also appeared in a team-high 33 games with 24 starts last year en route to claiming Second-Team All-CAA distinction.

Senior Kelsey Bryan, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player-of-the-Year, was second on the team last year with a .342 batting average, 52 hits and 36 runs scored.  

Five Things to Know
  1. UNCW put together a 35-20-1 record last year to set a single-season mark for victories. The Seahawks also made their first-ever postseason appearance by playing in the NISC Lynchburg Regional.
  2. Davis enters her senior season ranked sixth in program history with 30 career wins. She is also ninth all-time with 241 career strikeouts.
  3. Radford is a perfect 4-0 entering this weekend's play and outscored its opponents by a 20-7 count in the opening weekend of the season.
  4. The host 49ers began the year with a doubleheader sweep against Elon before losing their home opener against South Carolina on Wednesday.
  5. Dayton is also opening its season this weekend. The Flyers fashioned a 29-27 record last year, including a 13-10 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
