Women's Tennis Team Makes Fall Debut

Navy Blue & Gold Invitational Day 1 Results

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – The UNCW women's tennis team went 4-3 in singles and 6-4 in doubles on the opening day of the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational on Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy's Brigade Sports Complex.

The Seahawks, making the first of four tournament appearances this fall, are being joined in the three-day event by the host Midshipmen, George Washington, Mary Washington, Maryland, Richmond, Rutgers, St. Francis and Towson. The event features four singles flights and two doubles flights.

Four players – Rachel Marthinsen, Maddy Muller-Hughes, Rishika Ravindran and Celeste Matute – advanced to the quarterfinals in their singles brackets.

In doubles action, sophomore Lea Dubois-Rebiere, playing with Navy's Tina Li, moved into the semifinals of the Flight B Doubles draw.

"We had a strong start to the fall season here at the Naval Academy," said Hans Olsen, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "Despite missing several weeks of training due to Hurricane Florence, we came out focused with mental strength and showed a lot of fight from start to finish. We feel fortunate to be on the road together and are excited to get back to it tomorrow morning."

Action continues Saturday with matches starting at 9 a.m.
