CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team opened the spring season with a pair of losses in the Duckworth Doubleheader on Saturday at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Center.

The Seahawks, 0-2, fell to state rival Appalachian State in the opening match of the event, 4-2, before being blanked by Charleston Southern, 4-0, in the nightcap.

Senior Madara Straume and junior Sabrina Barisano were the only two Seahawks to pick up victories on the day. Straume swept past Appalachian State's Maria Jose' Zacarias, 6-0, 6-3, and Barisano outlasted ASU's Heidi Swope, 6-0, 5-7, 7-5.

The Seahawks return to action on Thursday, Feb. 1, with a 1 p.m. home match vs. regional rival Coastal Carolina in the spring home debut for Coach Hans Olsen and the club.
