Seahawks Delete App In Home Debut

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior Andres Torres upset the 61st-ranked player in the country and sophomore Michael Copeland celebrated his birthday by clinching the match as UNCW defeated Appalachian State, 5-2, in the men's tennis home opener for the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions on Saturday at the UNCW courts.

The Seahawks won their second straight match to improve to 2-1 and kicked off a six-match home stand on a successful note. UNCW improved to 7-3 lifetime against the Mountaineers of the Sun Belt Conference.

"It was good to be playing back home and we're pleased to get the win today," said Mait DuBois, UNCW's 11th-year head coach. "We have some work to do with our doubles, but for the second straight match, our guys came out tough after dropping the doubles point.

"Appalachian has some very strong spots in their top-3 positions and we knew those were going to be important. We were able to win the top-3 spots in singles and that gave us a lot of confidence.

"Ignasi (de Rueda) had one of his most solid performances today and has really made some strides. Andres (Torres) picked up a nationally-ranked win over Scott Webster. We have a little break over the next couple weeks and are looking forward to having the time to put some quality work in."

DuBois and his team surrendered the doubles point after losing on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts, but reeled off four consecutive singles matches in straight sets to claim the match.

In singles, UNCW sophomore Ignasi de Rueda, the reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Year, topped ASU's Milo Bergeron, 6-1, 6-3, for the first off the court to even the score and Daniel Groom, Agustin Savarino and Copeland followed with victories to secure the victory.

Copeland, a second-year player from Johannesburg, South Africa, served up the match clincher with a 6-4, 6-1 thumping of Appalachian's Spencer Brown at No. 4 singles.

The Seahawks continues their lengthy stay in Wilmington on Friday, Feb. 9, when Liberty visits the Port City for a 1 p.m. match.
