Spring Slate Under Way For Women's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team embarks on a 17-match spring schedule this weekend with a pair of matches against Appalachian State and Charleston Southern in Charlotte.

The Seahawks, 11-8 one year ago, return five letter winners from the team that advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship match last April in Elon, N.C. The matches against the Mountaineers and Buccaneers will be held at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Center.

"We're looking forward to two good matches against Appalachian State and Charleston Southern," said third-year UNCW Head Coach Hans Olsen. "The team has brought great energy to practices this week and we're excited about competing this weekend. We're preparing all week and will be ready for the challenge this weekend in Charlotte."

Three seniors – Xandra Fougner, Madara Straume and Thai Thompson – will anchor the 10-player squad. Junior Sabrina Barisano, sophomore Celeste Matute and five freshmen – Sarah Horn, Maddy Muller-Hughes, Rachel Marthinsen, Rashika Ravindran and Lea Dubois-Rebiere - provide depth for the team.

Straume, a native of Jurmala, Latvia, is the cornerstone of the Seahawks. The hard-hitting southpaw fashioned a 16-3 singles record last year at No. 1 singles and was invited to compete in the Oracle/ITA National Master's Championship in Malibu, Calif., last fall.

Straume, who collected First-Team All-CAA honors in singles and doubles last season, was named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2017 CAA Championships and has amassed a 25-11 singles record over the last two seasons.

Overall, the Seahawks will play nine of their 17 matches at home, including the final four matches against UNC Charlotte, James Madison, Charleston and Towson. UNCW stages its home opener on Thursday, Feb. 1, vs. regional rival Coastal Carolina.

UNCW wraps up the season at the CAA Championships on April 20-22 in Elon, N.C.
