Cougars Hand Seahawks 5-2 Defeat In Finale

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – The College of Charleston dropped the doubles point, but bounced back with five singles victories to trim UNCW, 5-2, in the regular season finale for both teams early Friday at the Stevens Tennis Center.
 
The Cougars improved to 18-8 overall and 2-3 in the CAA with the victory. The Seahawks had their three-match winning streak and carry a 9-7 overall mark and 2-3 conference ledger into next weekend's CAA Championships at Elon, N.C.
 
UNCW jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by winning matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 3 tandem of Xandra Fougner and Celeste Matute defeated CofC's Christi Woodson and Turner Yates, 6-3, to be the first off the court. After the Cougars took the No. 2 doubles match, UNCW's top team of Sabrina Barisano and Madara Straume edged CofC's Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely, 7-5, to get the Seahawks off to a strong start.
 
However, CofC won the first four matches in singles play, clinching it at No. 4 singles when Helena Nyikos topped Fougner, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
 
Barisano picked up UNCW's lone victory in singles by defeating McNeely, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 slot.
 
The Seahawks will learn their seeding this week for the CAA Championships, which run Friday through Sunday at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
