Seahawks Conquer Charlotte In Men's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Daniel Groom clinched the match for a team-leading third time this season to lift UNCW past Charlotte, 5-2, in the final match of "The Battle At The Beach" men's tennis round robin event on Sunday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks finished 2-1 in the four-team affair and improved to 7-4 this season. The 49ers now stand 9-9.
 
In cool, windy conditions, the Seahawks dropped the doubles point for the eighth time this season, but bounced back nicely with strong singles play to take the match.
 
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, top player Andres Torres evened the match with a 6-3, 6-2 verdict over Charlotte's Sam Rice.
 
Freshman Leon Back then gave UNCW a 2-1 margin after winning in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, against Oriol Puig at No. 5 singles before another rookie, Michael Copeland, pushed the lead to 3-1 by outlasting Max Beniam, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, at the No. 6 slot.
 
Groom then clinched the match at No. 4 singles by rallying from behind to beat Alex Garcia, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
 
The Seahawks, 5-2 at home, play the fourth match in a six-match homestand on Saturday, March 25, vs. Morgan State at 2 p.m.
