Seahawks Win Home Debut In Women's Tennis

WILMINGTON, North Carolina –  The UNCW women's tennis team swept the doubles point and added four singles victories to defeat Charleston Southern, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action on Thursday at the UNCW Tennis Courts.
 
The Seahawks, playing their first home match of the spring, evened their record at 1-1 on the young season, while the Buccaneers of the Big South Conference dropped their season debut.
 
In a match that was rescheduled due to inclement weather last week, the Seahawks started quickly by winning the No. 2 doubles match and the top tandem of Annika Sillanpaa and Alix Theodossiou nailed down the early point with a 6-4 decision over Sophie Cloessner and Nicolin Leucke.
 
The Bucs evened the score at 1-1 with a win at No. 4 singles before Sillanpaa, a senior from Tampere, Finland, put the Seahawks back on top, 2-1, by trimming Mi'Kola Cooper, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
 
The Seahawks increased the lead to 3-1 at No. 6 singles behind sophomore Sabrina Barisano, who raced past Femcke van Rensburg, 6-2, 6-3.
 
UNCW's top singles player, Madara Straume, then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 verdict over Clossner, who earned First-Team All-Big South honors last season.
 
The Seahawks, who play three home matches in four days, return to the courts tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 10) when they host Campbell at 1 p.m.
