Chants Edge Seahawks In Women's Tennis

Conway, South Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team finally got its spring season under way on Sunday and fell in a tight match, 4-3, to regional rival Coastal Carolina at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
 
The Seahawks, who had their first outing of the spring cancelled due to rain and second match postponed because of weather, won the doubles point before dropping four singles matches.
 
UNCW's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams gave the Seahawks the early point. Seniors Alix Theodossiou and Annika Sillanpaa topped Sara Bondar and Rylie Cox, 6-4, at the top of the lineup and Madara Straume and Sabrina Barisano nailed down the point with a 6-3 decision against Natalie Wall and Romane Delay.
 
The Seahawks picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles behind Straume and Theodossiou, but the Chanticleers rallied from behind for the non-conference win.
 
Straume cruised past Cox at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-1, and Theodossiou routed Wall, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 position for UNCW's two singles victories.
 
With the score knotted at 3-all, Delay clinched the match for the Chants by outlasting UNCW's Xandra Fougner, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
 
The Seahawks return to the courts on Thursday with their spring home debut vs. Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.
