Seahawks Begin Home Schedule This Weekend

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – With a successful first weekend of the season behind them, the Seahawks hope to continue the success at the friendly confines of Boseman Field this weekend with the Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic.

The three-day event, which begins on Friday, Feb. 24, will feature UNCW, UMBC, North Texas and Appalachian State. Four games will be played on Friday and Saturday in addition to a doubleheader on Sunday. Each day's action starts at 10 a.m.

The Seahawks won three of four games to begin the season at the Charleston Southern Buccaneer Invitational. UNCW defeated Virginia and East Tennessee State while splitting a pair of contests against host Charleston Southern.

Sophomore Rachel Willis led the Seahawks' offense by posting a .417 batting average with five hits, including a home run and a double, while driving in three runs.

Senior pitcher Peyton Jordan allowed just three runs, including one earned run, in her first two appearances of the season. She scattered six hits over 14.1 innings while splitting a pair of decisions.  
Five Things to Know
  1. UNCW and North Texas will meet for the first time in softball when the teams square off on Friday.
  2. The matchups for Sunday's doubleheader will be determined based on the results of the first two days of the tournament. The top two teams play at 12:30 p.m., while the third and fourth seeds open the day's slate at 10 a.m.
  3. UNCW has opened its season with a win in six of the last seven years after edging Virginia, 2-1, last Friday. The Seahawks have also defeated the Cavaliers three straight times.  
  4. The Seahawks hit five home runs in last weekend's tournament at Charleston Southern. They did not reach the five home run mark last season until Mar. 16.  
  5. Jordan became the fifth pitcher in UNCW history to reach 30 career wins when she limited Virginia to just one unearned run last Friday. The Waxhaw, N.C., product is now 30-34 in her college career.  

Players to Watch

Appalachian StateAlisha Josey, a freshman outfielder, has collected a team-high 10 hits through the Mountaineers' first eight games while driving in a team-high six runs. She has posted at least one hit in all eight games heading into a mid-week contest at North Carolina A&T.  

North Texas – Freshman utility player Lacy Gregory has tallied 13 of the Mean Green's 29 hits so far this year, including a pair of home runs. She also paces the squad with 10 runs batted in and has posted a .481 batting average.  

UMBC – Senior pitcher Nicole Casagrand has earned two of the Retrievers' three wins this season while compiling a 3.13 earned run average. She has pitched a team-high 15.2 innings in four appearances.
