Seahawks Win Fourth Straight In Women's Tennis

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Junior Madara Straume improved to 5-0 in singles to power the UNCW women's tennis team to its fourth consecutive victory in a 6-1 throttling of state rival UNC Greensboro on Thursday at the UNCG Courts.
 
The Seahawks, 4-1, have bounced back nicely following a narrow season-opening loss at Coastal Carolina with victories over Charleston Southern, Campbell, USC Upstate and UNCG.
 
The Seahawks swept all three doubles matches on Thursday to grab a quick 1-0 lead against the Spartans and then tacked on five singles decisions for the easy win.
 
In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Alix Theodossiou and Annika Sillanpaa edged UNCG's Alice Taylor and Yasmin Franco, 7-5, and the No. 2 team of Straume and Sabrina Barisano stopped UNCG's Blaine Boaz and Nancy Bridges, 6-4. Laura Gomez and Celeste Matute then completed the sweep with a 7-5 triumph against Masey DeMoss and Corinne Blythe.
 
Straume has played at the top of the lineup in all five matches this spring and rolled through the competition. She cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory vs. UNCG's Alice Taylor on Thursday. Theodossiou, Sillanpaa, Barisano and Xandra Fougner added singles victories for the Seahawks.
 
The Seahawks return home on Saturday to open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a Noon match vs. Elon.
