WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCWSports.com takes a closer look at Friday night's Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball opener between the Seahawks and defending league champion Elon.Â
JUST THE FACTS: UNCW dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener on Friday night with a 75-67 setback at defending league champion Elon. The loss moved the Seahawks' record to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in the CAA while Elon upped its record to 9-3 overall with a 1-0 mark in league play.
FOUR SCORE: UNCW had four players score in double figures for the third time this season in Friday's CAA opener at Elon. Senior guard
Madison Raque scored a team-high 14 points while redshirt senior forward
Jenny DeGraaf added 13 points. Sophomore guard
Moriah Crisp contributed 12 points to go with 11 markers off the bench from
Lacey Suggs.
AW, SHOOT: UNCW limited Elon to just 32.3 percent shooting from the field, marking the lowest field goal percentage by a Division I opponent against the Seahawks this year. Catawba, an NCAA Division II program, shot just 30.3 percent on Nov. 24 in the Seahawks' 74-59 victory inside Trask Coliseum.
ON SECOND THOUGHT: Led by eight points from senior guard
Madison Raque, the Seahawks tallied 23 points in the second quarter on Friday night. UNCW, which is shooting 42.7 percent from the field in the second stanza this year, connected on 8-of-16 shots from the floor, including a 4-for-8 effort from three-point range. In the last two games, the Seahawks are 16-for-33 from the field in the second period.
GREAT EIGHT: Sophomore guard
Lacey Suggs posted her eight consecutive double-digit scoring effort after coming off the bench to score 11 points. The White Lake, N.C., product was 3-for-6 from the field while connecting on 5-of-6 free throws.
MAKE IT A DOUBLE: Redshirt senior forward
Jenny DeGraaf put together her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's loss at Elon. DeGraaf, a native of Springboro, Ohio, has posted a double-double in each of her last two games following a 21-point, 10-rebound performance against Georgia State on Dec. 21.
MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Senior guard
Madison Raque recorded her second straight double-digit scoring performance after finishing with 14 points in the Seahawks' loss at Elon. The Louisville, Ky., product had scored just nine total points in back-to-back games at Pitt and Wofford before returning to score 11 points against Georgia State and 14 points on Friday. Raque has fashioned eight double-digit scoring efforts in 12 games this year.
THE 700 CLUB: Senior guard
Madison Raque also reached the 700-point mark for her career in Friday night's conference opener. A four-year letter winner for the Seahawks, Raque has now scored 706 points in 94 career games.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: Sophomore guard
Moriah Crisp posted her first double-digit scoring effort since Nov. 15 after netting 12 points in Friday's CAA opener at Elon. Crisp, who has tallied three double-digit scoring performances in her career, was 4-for-12 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Sophomore guard
Timber Tate celebrated her birthday on Friday, scoring six points with three rebounds in 31 minutes.
