Seahawks Begin Busy Week On Two Tennis Fronts

NCCU Invitational Brackets | Carolinas Regional Singles Draw | Carolinas Regional Doubles Draw

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's tennis team continued its fall schedule by opening tournament play at two different sites on Thursday.
 
The Seahawks went 3-2 in matches at the ITA Carolinas Regional at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Senior Xandra Fougner won her first singles match of the day, defeating Appalachian State's Rebecca Morse, 6-2, 6-4, before falling to Furman's Danni Vines, 6-2, 6-2.
 
In doubles, the tandem of Sabrina Barisano and Madara Straume reached the third round of the main doubles draw with a pair of victories over teams from N.C. State and East Carolina. Barisano and Straume will face North Carolina's Alexandra Sanford and Sara Daavettila early Friday.
 
Straume, a senior from Jurmala, Latvia, will make her debut in the main singles draw on Friday, taking on N.C. State's Amanda Rebol.
 
Less than 30 miles away, several other Seahawks joined four other state rivals in the N.C. Central Invitational at the NCCU Tennis Course and Elmira Avenue Park. UNCW is making its third straight appearance in the event.
 
The Seahawks went 1-3 in singles action and 2-1 in doubles play. Freshman Rachel Marthinsen posted the lone singles victory with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision over North Carolina A&T's Fabriana Ramirez. In doubles, Sarah Horn and Celeste Matute advanced to the finals of the Eagles Flight with a pair of wins on Thursday over opponents from UNC Charlotte and North Carolina A&T.
 
Action concludes tomorrow in Durham, with the last round of doubles starting at 9 a.m.
