Seahawks Open Spring Tennis Season By Beating ASU

Wilmington, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team christened its spring season by cruising past Appalachian State, 5-2, in non-conference action early Saturday at the UNCW Courts.
 
The Seahawks next participate in the ITA's Kick-off Weekend this coming week, traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to take on Florida on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m.

In Saturday's match, the Seahawks captured the doubles point for an early 1-0 advantage and then tacked on four singles victories to down the Mountaineers.

Freshmen Daniel Groom and Ignasi de Rueda got the Seahawks off to a good start in doubles with a 7-5 verdict over ASU's Alex Brea and Alex Pavkovich. After a loss at No. 2 doubles, the Seahawks clinched the point at the top doubles slot when Gabe Hocevar and Agustin Savarino teamed up for a 7-5 win over Jack Maddocks and Scott Webster.

In singles action, junior Andres Torres pushed UNCW's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Milo Bargeron at the No. 3 position and freshman Michael Copeland raised the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Pavkovich.

Groom then clinched the match at No. 6 singles by defeating Brea, 6-3, 6-4.
